With the support of the Google News Initiative, we’re excited to announce the expansion of Project Oasis, a research effort to more deeply understand independent digital native news organizations across the world. The global project will be led by SembraMedia, with local partners to conduct research.
The initial phase of expansion will focus on aligning and strengthening existing directories across North America, Europe and Latin America. The goal is to map and analyze more than 2,500 publishers across 68 countries over the next several months.
SembraMedia and the Google News Initiative will also begin to work with regional partners to expand the directory and report to include Asia, Africa and the Middle East.
In this initial phase, SembraMedia will work with a group of partners that includes: LION Publishers in North America; AJOR in Latin America; and in Europe: the European Journalism Centre (EJC), Media and Journalism Research Center (MJRC), Global Forum for Media Development (GFMD), and International Media Support (IMS).
“Years of research and analysis of independent media have taught us that mapping them unlocks numerous positive impacts for the news ecosystem,” said Ana Paula Valacco, Project Oasis Director. “We are confident that a global database will help media leaders, funders, support organizations, and other stakeholders, to understand regional differences and similarities better, identify trends that are affecting media now and in the future, and provide insights into the best opportunities to increase the success of independent media organizations worldwide.”
The global expansion of this research will enable detailed analysis and further insights into pathways to sustainability, differences between countries and regions, and enablers of success. The first global report will be published with the directory in 2024.
“Editorially independent digital native news organizations will play an increasingly crucial role in providing communities around the world with credible, high quality information,” said Arun Venkataraman, Global Strategy Lead at Google News Initiative. “This project is important for the ecosystem to more deeply understand who these publishers are, the challenges they face, and what they need to continue serving the needs of their communities. We couldn’t be more excited for the further expansion of the project and the insights it’ll lead to for the ecosystem.”
The project builds on existing regional directories and reports on digital native media in Latin America, North America and Europe. Project Oasis started in 2019 as a partnership between LION, Douglas K. Smith, and the Google News Initiative focused on North America.
In 2022, SembraMedia mapped digital media in more than 40 European countries as part of Project Oasis Europe, which was launched in April 2023. As part of the global Project Oasis, SembraMedia will also translate its Spanish-language directory, which includes more than 1,000 digital native news organizations in Latin America, Spain, the US Hispanic Market. The Spanish media directory was started in 2015 as an ongoing research to better understand journalist-led media organizations. In 2021, SembraMedia published its Inflection Point report expanding its work to include media organizations in Southeast Asia and Africa.
For nearly a decade, SembraMedia has conducted extensive research to better understand the needs of the news ecosystem and identify the trends, opportunities and challenges of building sustainable, independent, and impactful media organizations.
Project Oasis promotional partners include: Community Media Forum Europe (CMFE), Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas, Financial Times Strategies, The Gabo Foundation, International Centre for Journalist (ICFJ), University of Central Lancashire (UCLan), Media Innovation Studio, Public Interest News Foundation (PINF), Journalism.co.uk, Asociación de la prensa de Madrid (amp) and Col.legi de Periodistes de Catalunya.
