Rosental Calmon Alves es profesor de Periodismo en la Universidad de Texas, en Austin, donde preside la cátedra Knight de Periodismo y la cátedra de Comunicación de Unesco. También es el fundador y director del Centro Knight de Periodismo en las Américas. Creado en 2002, el Centro ha beneficiado a miles de periodistas alrededor del mundo por medio de sus programas de entrenamiento.
El profesor Alves se mudó a Estados Unidos en 1996, después de 27 años de carrera periodística en Río de Janeiro, Brasil, especialmente en el periódico Jornal do Brasil, donde trabajó como corresponsal y director ejecutivo. En 1995, lanzó la primera edición de un periódico brasileño en Internet. En 1997, desarrolló un curso de periodismo en línea en la Universidad de Texas. Desde 2011, ha enseñado Periodismo Emprendedor, una clase dedicada a la innovación en los medios, startups y administración de proyectos.
El profesor Alves es el fundador y director del Simposio Internacional de Periodismo en Línea (ISOJ, por sus siglas en inglés), una conferencia global de la cual ha sido anfitrión en Austin, Texas, desde 1999. Ha trabajado como consultor en empresas mediáticas, pequeñas y grandes, en América Latina y Europa, aconsejándoles sobre estrategias de medios digitales; y es miembro de la junta directiva de varias organizaciones internacionales.
Rosental Calmon Alves is a professor of journalism at the University of Texas at Austin, where he is the Knight Chair in Journalism and the UNESCO Chair in Communication. He is also the founder and director of the Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas. Created in 2002, the Center has benefited thousands of journalists around the world with its training programs.
Professor Alves moved to the United States in 1996, after a 27-year journalism career in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, most notably at the Jornal do Brasil newspaper, where he worked as a correspondent and executive director. In 1995, he launched the first edition of a Brazilian newspaper on the Internet. In 1997, he developed an online journalism course at the University of Texas. Since 2011, he has taught entrepreneurial journalism, a class dedicated to innovation in media, startups and project management.
Professor Alves is the founder and director of the International Symposium on Online Journalism (ISOJ), a global conference hosted in Austin, Texas, since 1999. He has worked as a consultant to media companies, small and large, in Latin America and Europe, advising them on digital media strategies. He is a member of the board of directors for several international organizations.
