Digital media directories

SembraMedia’s directories help media leaders connect and learn from the experience of others; enable donors, investors, and journalism support organizations to identify opportunities for impact; provide up-to-date data for academics and policymakers; and guide people seeking independent news sources.

Spanish-Language Media Directory

In 2015, SembraMedia began creating the first directory of digital media outlets in Spanish. Today nearly 1,000 organizations from 24 countries in Latin America, Spain, and the Spanish-language market in the United States and Canada. This ongoing research project is continuously updated by our team of specialists.

Global Project Oasis Media Directory

Building on SembraMedia’s mapping and research methodology in Spanish, we were invited to lead the global research initiative, Project Oasis. Thanks to support from a growing list of international partners, the directory includes more than 3,000 digital media outlets from Latin America, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, the United States, and Canada, and continues to expand with new mapping efforts underway in India and Africa.

From research to action

Through our directory mapping and research, we study journalists and media leaders, analyze data, and identify trends and opportunities that we share with our community.

Initiatives

We use what we learn in our research to provide case studies and insights for our training and consulting programs. Our programs are designed to support the sustainability of news organizations to strengthen their teams, and their editorial independence.

Reports

We share our research findings to help our community learn and connect with each other. Our audience includes media leaders, journalists, academics, journalism support organizations, donors, investors, and other decision-makers.

More than a decade of research

We began in 2015 by mapping independent digital media outlets and building our first media directory to better understand the challenges and opportunities of Spanish-language publishers in Latin America, Spain, the United States, and Canada.

Our research is rooted in the experience of an international network of Digital Media Specialists that includes journalists, media entrepreneurs, professors, and other researchers.

Janine Warner, Co-founder and Executive Director of SembraMedia, presenting the Spanish-language directory at the 9th Ibero-American Colloquium on Digital Journalism in 2016, in Austin, Texas (U.S.).

SembraMedia’s Florencia Aza presenting Project Oasis and the global directory in 2024, in Buenos Aires (Argentina).

In 2024, we took a global leap. Building on our experience in the Spanish-speaking world, and with the support of the Google News Initiative and our partners, we expanded our mapping methodology to Europe and Brazil. In 2025, we took over the lead of Project Oasis, which was originally created by LION Publishers in the U.S. and Canada. LION continues as a partner and we’re adding more all the time, including Tiny News Collective.

Thanks to support from our growing list of partners, we are working to expand our research to include media outlets from India and Africa. If you are interested in working with us, email projectoasis@sembramedia.org.
